‘Penny Dreadful’ Season 2 Episode 8 Recap: Welcome to the Jungle

By Brian Ives

This week episode of Penny Dreadful is called “Memento Mori,” and looks at how our memories of how we used to be affect us today. How much does Lily Frankenstein’s past life as a prostitute affect her view of the world—and particularly, men—in her current form? Can Sir Malcolm’s love of his deceased children pull him from Ms. Poole’s spell? And how much of Dorian Gray’s past is he willing to share? We learned varying amounts about each question this week.

Recap: Penny Dreadful Season 2, Episode 7 Recap

We begin a few moments after last week‘s murder/sex scene. Lily seems much more interested in her hapless sex partner, now that he’s dead.

Meanwhile, back at her cousin’s, John Clare is (as we expected) not happy that he caught Lily on a date with Dorian Gray; he wakes Victor up—the doctor appears to have nodded off after a bit of a drug binge—and demands to know where Lily has been. “She’s not yours, she’s not his, she’s MINE.”

One day, Mr. Clare says, after he and Lily have moved far away (that’s probably not happening anyway, but), he will return “To show you the monster you’ve created.” He’s referring to himself with a bit of bravado, of course. But we know that Lily may be far more fearsome.
